2G scam: is prime minister Manmohan Singh is involved?

The 2G spectrum scandal is turning out to be a multi-faced mystery with a new revelation surfacing every day. The latest shocker is the Finance Minister Pranab Mukherjee’s note to the prime minister, which seeks to highlight that the current Home Minister P Chidambaram, who was the finance minister then, could have prevented the illegal 2G spectrum allocations. The scam was enormous to begin with; it is getting bigger with the role of top ministers emerging.
There are even hints that the prime minister’s office was in the know of the illegalities but preferred to stay a mute spectator. This brings Prime Minister Manmohan Singh into the picture.
Firstpost gives you a quick recap of what the 2G case was really about, how it unfolded and who were the people initially implicated in the case.
People who’ve been implicated in the scam
Former telecom minister A Raja, who is believed to have pushed this rather flaky policy. In his defence Raja is stating that the allotment of spectrum was made on basis of recommendations by TRAI. Raja was arrested on 2 February, and charged with criminal conspiracy, cheating, abuse of office and forgery.
Siddhartha Behura, who was the secretary of the DoT then, has been charged with cheating and abuse of office.
RK Chandolia, who was the personal secretary of A Raja has been charged with cheating and abuse of office too.
On 8 February, the CBI also arrested Shahid Usman Balwa, Director of Swan Telecom Pvt Ltd, on charges of criminal conspiracy, cheating and forgery. Swan Telecom is believed to be front company for Anil Ambani’s Reliance Communications. In March, Asif Balwa, brother of Shahid Balwa, and Rajiv Agarwal from Kusegaon Fruits & Vegetables Pvt Ltd, were arrestd by the CBI. Balwa is alleged to have paid a bribe of nearly Rs 214 crore to A Raja for allotting licenses at throwaway prices.
The bribe was paid through a circitous route which involved the Kusegaon Fruits and Vegetables Pvt Ltd company, Cineyug Films and Kalaignar Television in Chennai.
In April, the CBI followed it with arrests of Vinod Goenka, Director, Swan Telecom Pvt Ltd, for criminal conspiracy, cheating and forgery, and the partner of Shahid Balwa in DB Realty, which had floated Swan Telecom in the first place.
The other persons who were arrested in the case were Sanjay Chandra Director, Unitech, Gautam Doshi Group MD, Reliance ADAG, Hari Nair Company Secy, Reliance ADAG and Surendra Pipara Senior VP, Reliance ADAG charged with abetment to cheating, bribing government servants and forgery.
Kalaingar Television is owned by Karunanidhi’s daughter Kanimozhi and his first wifeDayalu Ammal. While Kanimozhi was arrested when the CBI filed its second chargsheet, Dayalu Ammal was not because the CBI stated that she only speaks Tamil and thus could not be involved in the scam.
Kanimozhi, is charged with cheating, criminal conspiracy and accepting bribes. Along with her, Sharad Kumar the Managing Director of Kalaignar TV was also arrested on the same charges.

John Abraham-Genelia D'Souza are not married

Pandit Bhagwat Guruji, who played the Pandit in the wedding sequence of actors John Abraham and Genelia D'Souza in Vipul Shah’s film Force claims to have married them for real. The Pandit claimed that he had performed actual wedding rituals and has recited proper mantras during the filming of the wedding sequence in Force.

Therefore, he told that John and Genelia are now husband and wife. This news came as a shocking to the actors and the film's producer Vipul Amrutlal Shah. “Countless number of weddings have been performed in Hindi cinema, but this is the first time that I have come across someone so keen to be in the limelight that he can go far enough to claim to have married Genelia D'Souza off,” told Shah, while rubbishing the Pandit’s claim in a statement.

Actress Genelia D’Souza is very upset with the reports of her marriage. Her spokesperson says: “The bizarreness of the pundit's claims is astounding. It is extremely unfortunate that someone would try to take advantage of just being in the same scene as Genelia D'Souza in this manner.”

While John Abraham is presently single, Genelia is believed to be dating actor Ritesh Deshmukh.

shoaib akhtar riles indian cricket again with his autobiography

FORMER Pakistani fast bowler Shoaib Akhtar has ruffled feathers in India again in a headline-grabbing autobiography that also contains candid admissions about ball-tampering and corruption.
The book, from the man who was once the fastest bowler in the world, takes a swipe at Indian heroes Sachin Tendulkar and Rahul Dravid, as well as unnamed figures who have "ruined" the game in Pakistan.
His comments about the star duo in Controversially Yours, excerpts of which have been released to the media, have especially made waves in India, Pakistan's neighbour and great rival.
Akhtar, 36, claimed Tendulkar and Dravid, two of the world's top Test batsmen, played for their own records and rarely won matches for India.
"I can't recall a series from Tendulkar's earlier playing days when he helped win matches. He might have had more runs and records but he lacked the ability to finish a game," he wrote.
Akhtar, who played 46 Tests and 163 one-day internationals between 1997 and 2011, recalled that on India's tour of Pakistan in 2006, Tendulkar was "distinctly uncomfortable" facing him.
"We managed to psychologically browbeat him," the fast bowler wrote. "We bounced the ball at him and were able to unnerve him."
The book was released in New Delhi last week, but its launch in Tendulkar's home city of Mumbai on Sunday was cancelled by organisers without any explanation.
The bowler, whose career was marred by allegations of drug abuse and ball-tampering, wrote that he did not feel guilty about "working" on the ball.
"The game has become very unequal and only favours the batsman," he wrote. "If you bowl a no ball, the batsman gets a free hit; bouncers have been curtailed.
"They have restricted us so mercilessly that I find it very difficult to feel entirely guilty about ball tampering."
Akhtar goes on to describe how the ball can be tampered with.
"There are so many ways to prepare the ball, it's not just a matter of scratching it," he wrote. "I have used my boot, nails and zip of my back pocket. Many bowlers use vaseline or gum on the ball.
"The only way to stop this is for the International Cricket Council (ICC) to ensure that at least some pitches are prepared in favour of bowlers."
His other solution is to legalise it and "set rules for it".
"Perhaps some manipulation of the ball, like scratching it with your nails, could be legally allowed," he added.
Pakistan cricket has been hit by a series of controversies, including the lengthy bans handed to three players - Salman Butt, Mohammad Aamer and Mohammad Asif - over a betting scandal last year.
Pakistan have been forced in recent years to play home series abroad after an attack on the Sri Lankan team in Lahore in 2009.
"I wish I had played under (former captain) Imran Khan," wrote Akhtar.
"He was the last man who cared about the game and the Pakistan team. Unfortunately, our seniors were the most corrupt people I have known in my whole life.
"Barring a few like Rashid Latif and Moin Khan, the rest indulged in activities that certainly did not help the game, yet most of them were let off with fines.
"It was not the board alone that ruined Pakistani cricket, it was the team itself."
Senior Indian cricket official Rajiv Shukla reacted angrily to Akhtar's claims about Tendulkar and Dravid.
"Sachin does not need to prove anything to anyone, least of all to Shoaib.
